SEASONAL QUOTES. July is the seventh month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days. It is, on average, the warmest month in most of the Northern hemisphere (where it is the second month of summer) and the coldest month in much of the Southern hemisphere. The second half of the year commences in July. The birthstone for July is a red ruby. In the Southern Hemisphere, July is the seasonal equivalent of January in the Northern Hemisphere. Wikipedia
That beautiful season the Summer! Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape. Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Pastor Pam selling fair trade at the UCC Regional Youth Event.
FAIR TRADE-DEFIANCE. by Pastor Pam. This year, the United Church of Christ Great Lakes Regional Youth Event was in Defiance, OH. Two years ago, after seeing the typical merchandise available at the National Youth Event, I promised to sell fair trade in Defiance. So I did. Ordering especially with youth in mind, I took a carload of goodies to the three-day event. The youth heard speakers, worshipped, played and learned. I taught a workshop about fair trade. What can happen to workers in profit-first business? Examples of the protections: for children, women, the environment. For instance, if a fair trade order is canceled, the producers are compensated. I encouraged the youth to go back to their churches, teach about fair trade and hold their own sales. One young lady was later bubbling over to her leader about what they can do back home. Over $900 worth of merchandise sold that day. At least 20% profit will benefit the church's general fund. And what treasures we still have for sale! From lime marmalade to rain forest necklaces, drums and silk, stuffed animals and wooden trains. A delicate alpaca shawl from Peru would be a lovely gift. Perhaps someone you know needs elephant-poo paper. Seriously. In my office, anytime, or on display at the Strawberry Festival. Good buys through good buying.

A THOUGHT TO PONDER. "If you want to build a ship, don't summon people to buy wood, prepare tools, distribute jobs, and organize the work, rather teach people the yearning for the wide, boundless, ocean." Antoine de Saint-Exupery |
OUR MIRACLE FROM GOD. An update for the congregation on Peyton Moodt. My name is Melissa Smallwood, my daughter is Peyton Alexandra Moodt, she was lifted up in prayer by many on and after February 4, 2009. I wanted to send you and the congregation an update on Peyton. She is doing wonderful! God has blessed our family in so many ways! Some of the things Peyton has been doing include: Helping take care of her new baby sister, Jocelyn, who is just 3 months old. Playing with other kids her age in daycare and out. She has a new house in Leroy and has a nice yard to play in. We recently were given a play house which she loves to run in and out of. Her aunt Heather, who was also lifted up in prayer after the accident that day has been spending time along with us raising Peyton. Just this past Christmas she got Peyton a little tikes car which Peyton loves to ride around in. Both Heather and Peyton are doing very well and I want to thank everyone for your support and kind words, and prayer for our family. If you would like to put an update in your newsletter for the church that would be great, just so that everyone knows that God is soooooo good!
MOMENT FOR MISSION. Claridon has a long history of mission and service. We hear Jesus say go and we follow. Claridon has a full year of specified mission projects. Learn more on the Claridon website at Mission Focus.
During the summer of 2010 (June, July, August), the Mission Committee will present the First Congregational Church of Claridon's very own kind of "ark" with our donations to HEIFER INTERNATIONAL.
More Heifer Mission. by Jean Dively. I have learned of some Heifer International projects that really excite me. These are the Urban Agricultural projects that Heifer supports in North America. Some of the cities where these projects are located include Brooklyn, NY, Poughkeepsie, NY, New London, CT, Holyoke, MA, Chicago, ILL, Milwaukee, WI, Portland, OR, Little Rock, AR, Birmingham, ALA, Atlanta, GA, Dallas, TX, and Toronto, Canada.
All of these projects exist for the promotion of food security, food justice, and community involvement for the urban working poor. Each project has restored vacant land. The land is nourished, most often organically, and then used for family gardens, community market gardening, seed saving, and for fresh produce for inner-city food pantries.
All of these projects are for the working poor. Some are directed toward immigrant groups, such as Bantu refugees. Quite a number of the agricultural projects have a youth component, especially in areas known for gang violence and drug cultures. Among the goals of these youth projects is teaching youth the basics of gardening so that they can produce foods for themselves and for their families. The gardens give them a tie to their communities and to local churches where other help will be available. The youth also learn entrepreneurial skills by participating in farmer’s markets and selling some of what they produce.
I find these so exciting that, next month, I would like to tell you some of the other operations that have come about from Heifer’s Urban Agricultural projects. Stay tuned for more on worms, fish, and bees ....
| STOCKING THE MISSION PANTRY. Food Pantry Items may be left on the bench by the back door near the elevator. This food is given to the Geauga Food Pantry at Burton Church, which now has bare shelves. The Focus Pantry items for July are crackers, Pasta, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Juices and canned meat. As usual they can use whatever you give. God bless you all. Pray for one another. |
DVD BIBLE STUDY. SUMMER TOPICS. Four lessons in the books of Luke and Acts: God's prophet and the prophetic movement. Then onto the Gospel of John and the context of conflict. Our course is "Jesus and the Gospels," taught by Dr Luke Timothy Johnson. Lectures are 30 minutes, followed by a short discussion. Most Sundays, at 11:30, in the upstairs conference room. We would love to have you drop in.
OHIO CONFERENCE GATHERING WRAP. by Bill Brandes. The June gathering at Tiffin was informative, powerful and special. Bill Brandes, Pastor Pam, Aubrey Woods and Ian LeRoy rode together Friday morning. Anna Easterday arrived the day before by way of Mount Vernon. We participated in two worships, a business session and workshops. Church revitalization (Unbinding the Gospel) and the new United Church of Christ song book, Sing! Prayer and Praise were the workshops we attended. Both the Taize worship and the Saturday worship with choir, string section, piano (Ian LeRoy), bells and guitars were powerful. Saturday's was led by Aubrey Woods. For me, the highlight was singing You Are which our congregation has sung quite a few times. An event not soon to be forgotten.

IT'S COMING. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL. by Bill Brandes. You've got a month to get ready. A month to invite. And, a month to get excited. Invite your friends and neighbors with children aged 3 years through 5th grade completed. The Theme is based on the Christmas story - Miracle at Midnight. Lighthouse United Methodist Church is collaborating with us. We will host the program which runs Monday - Friday, August 2 - 6. VBS director is Robin Stanley if you have questions. Registration is EASY and ONLINE at www.claridonucc.org
NOTES FROM PASTOR PAM. INVITATION. Did you know that Geauga County has grown 8.9% since 2000? Hambden and Auburn have seen the most growth. When a nearby house began construction, the owners appreciated a copy of the local phone book. They could look up businesses they needed. Or maybe you are good at cookies or mowing. Is there a new neighbor you might make welcome?
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. I heard before I arrived that Leslie wanted to resign the Christian Education director position, but no one ever stepped up to the plate, as they might say in the Smetana household. Well, Robin Stanley has volunteered. We are grateful for the many years Leslie gave her best to the job and excited about Robin's new energy. Since Robin is not yet a member, Bill Brandes will be elected to the position and work with Robin. Quick congregational meeting coming soon for that election.
CAMP. The week of June 21, Robin Stanley and Misty Mendoza were having fun at camp. Praise God. The church is sending 4 more children and a grandparent off to the Christian community, campfires and chicken nuggets of camp. I got to hear one fellow's excitement over "Hook, Line and Spirit" camp just today. Thanks to the donors, parents and grandparents making possible the life-changes of church camp.
FLASH NEWS. THE WINNER IS. by Bill Brandes. By he-said, she-said, on good authority Ian LeRoy is a winner of a Geauga Cooperative Ministry Student Scholarship. More incentive to attend the Cooperative Unity Worship on Sunday, July 11. Scholarship winners will be honored. Ian will again provide piano accompaniment. The special dinner and concert, on Sunday, June 23, were spectacular. Thank you Laura and all who worked very hard to make this "Evening with Ian LeRoy" a success. You won't want to miss another chance to hear Ian at the Annual Cooperative Ministry Unity Worship. Now, you know the rest of the story.

ITEMS FOR THE NEWSLETTER? You can send content (text and photos) by E-mail. Thanks. Bill Brandes - williambrandes@gmail.com - 440-313-2833.
