Phyllis (Blaser) Kopke, age 90, died March 3, 2010, in Newark, Ohio. She was the beloved wife for 62 years of Pastor H. J. Kopke, retired United Church of Christ minister. Phyllis majored in motherhood raising and guiding their three children to be servants of our Lord Jesus Christ. Phyllis was born December 16, 1919, in Cleveland,Ohio, and was preceded in death by her parents, William and Anna Blaser. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, March  6 at Claridon Congregational Church, 13942 Mayfield Road (U.S. 322), where the family will receive friends and relatives one (1) hour prior to service time. Burial in Claridon Center Cemetery, Geauga County, Ohio will follow Saturday’s memorial service. Complete Obituary.

CWS works with two Chilean agencies, FASIC (Fundacion de Ayuda Social de las Iglesia Cristianas) and IMECH, the Methodist Church of Chile.

Big Concept. Jesus welcomed those who did not expect a welcome.  Lepers were thought to be so sinful that they would be contagious.  In biblical times, people did not understand germs as spreading disease. However, they thought they had to exclude sinners from the faithful, for safety's sake.  Can you imagine any good way for people to judge who is bad, who is a sinner?  Even with the attorneys, investigators and evidence in our legal system, we do an imperfect job of judging. In the time of Jesus, since tax collectors worked for the non-Jewish government and often took more than their due, tax collectors were assumed to be sinners.  Wives could be dismissed by their husbands for no reason and might have to become prostitutes to feed themselves.  Prostitutes were excluded as sinful. Read More.

What is it? We serve the community in the name of God. When is it? The THIRD SATURDAY of each month from 1 to 5:30 PM and includes dinner. Where is it? We meet at 1 PM. at the Celebration Lutheran Church on Auburn Road. Who can come? ANYONE in grades 7-12. Bring your friends, bring your enemies, bring those near to Christ and far away. Historical Claridon Claridon Settlement: Asa Cowles (Father of Claridon) arrives in August, 1811 - builds a double log cabin on Aquilla Road, south of Mayfield. The settlers were members of the Burton Congregational Church (formed in 1808). Services were held in the log cabin especially when the journey to Burton was difficult; sermons would be read or the Rev. Luther Humphrey would come from Burton to preach. Formation of the Church: Petition signed by 27 to be dismissed from Burton to form a church in Claridon. Church formed, December 26, 1827. Nine of the 27 were of one family; Lucy Cotton Kellogg (a widow), her four children and their mates. Building the Church: Raising the frame took two days and was done in the fall of 1831. The inside work was done in the winter of 1831/1832 . The backs of the pews and the wainscoting supposedly came from one tree; "The Handsome Whitewood", which was given by Rev. Humphrey to be used in the building. The building was dedicated in 1832 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is believed that it had a spire until the late 1800's. Government: The Congregation dealt with spiritual matters. The rules of Discipline were spelled out, and seven members were excommunicated for various infractions. The Congregational Society dealt with financial matters, raising money to pay the preacher, make repairs, etc. The first called pastor was Rev. Myron Tracy; his salary was $350 per year, one-third in money and two-thirds in farm products at current prices. ~ Teeter Grosvenor, Historian. A Generational Chart for Claridon First Generation: The First Congregational Church of Claridon born on December 26, 1827 in Claridon, Geauga county, Ohio. There were 27 charter members. Second Generation: Our Mother is Burton Congregational Church born in 1808 in Burton, Geauga county, OH. Third Generation: Our Grandmother is First Church on the Green born in 1724 in Cheshire, New Haven, CT. Our Great Aunt is Center Congregational born in 1729 in Meriden, New Haven, CT. Fourth Generation: Our Great-grandmother is the First Congregational Church born in 1675 in Wallingford, New Haven, CT. Fifth Generation: Our Great great-grandmother is the First Church of Christ born in 1639 in New Haven, New Haven, CT. ~ Teeter Grosvenor, Historian. The Future Church What about the comma. In plain-speak, it is a graphic representation of the Still Speaking Initiative of which the United Church of Christ began several years back. The church is about transformation - of lives. The church should touch all people not just a select  few. It should speak directly to the imperfect not the perfect. And, the church should address the lot of the lost, the hungry, the  oppressed and the forgotten. Today not tomorrow. That is why Claridon has such a rich history of compassion in Mission Ministry and continues to this day. a mission focus that transforms lives. Following Jesus drives you to work a ministry that not only transforms the lives of those  around you, but, makes a decisive impact  on your own life. You look at your decisions and choices in a new light. You take  PAUSE to make those decisions in a way that impacts  outcomes which embrace the ministry and voice of Jesus. It is not a spectator sport. It requires effort, often effort from  those aspects of your personal life that have not been exercised in the past. So, take the COMMA in stride, take a PAUSE, take a  deep breath and embrace the LOVE of God and Jesus and what THEY have in store for you and ALL of creation. It is a magnificent and wonderful journey no matter how imperfect we and that journey may be. But, you must start somewhere. You are invited to join us as we learn together at Claridon. Christians have been traditionally co-joined with the Christmas story. Certainly important, but, what abut the lesser known connection played out in popular culture - as the Easter people. Although the perception may be that Christian is synonymous with Christmas, the faith is much deeper and the journey richer when one connects with the Easter season. Easter speaks to transformation and rebirth. No period (.) exists where hope is alive and well. The present state of affairs, even death itself, is but a bump, a comma (,) with more in store for those on the Easter journey. To continue with these houghts, read in entirety on the Massachusetts Conference United Church of Christ website. But, the following rings particularly true. Pauses grant us time for reflection. None of us ever stops learning, so we seek a word for today. We seek a word that is alive and fresh: not out of step with all that we have learned so far, but perhaps the next step on the path of faith. History is rich with wisdom that we gratefully accept. But what good does wisdom do us if it is only in the past? We seek to bring the ancient word into our modern world to lead us yet today. In the words of James Russell Lowell, "New occasions teach new duties, time makes ancient good uncouth."[1] So we strive to make the progress God demands of us. We rejoice to join with the United Church of Christ as we eagerly move into the future. We welcome our still-speaking God this day with a renewed promise never to place a period where God has placed a comma. Death has not had the final word; God has not allowed the Christ to be stopped by a human period, instead placing a divine comma on the Passion drama. Casting Crowns: We Are The Body It certainly doesn't hurt to be reminded (through various art forms) that how we treat our neighbor out of AND in church reflects on the LOVE that Jesus shared with EVERYONE. None of us is so perfect that we do not make the mistake of judging on appearance and on first impression. May we remind ourselves over-and-over that ALL are welcome in God's House. Yes, We ARE The Body.
